Anti-Muslim revisionist History

I suppose it stands to reason that given the right-wing blogosphere's current anti-Muslim efforts, they wouldn't be limited to tendentious interpretations of current events, but have moved on to a version of history where Muslims are responsible for everything bad, and nothing good:

The article is wrong though, it was a Persian not Arab with the algebra advances — Al-Khwarzimi...

I don’t want to conflate “Arabs” with “Muslims.” Arabs are quite capable of amazing cruelty without the excuses for it provided by Islam. It’s a case of the 99% making the 1% look bad (please note the order in which I placed those stats).

There are minorities and nations struggling for survival in the Arab/Muslim ocean of the Middle East and Africa (Assyrians, Armenians, Coptics, Jews, southern Sudanese, Ethiopians, Nigerians...), and we must be very sensitive not to unwittingly and inadvertently support Islamic fascism and Arab Imperialism, with their attempts to wipe out all other cultures, religions and civilizations. It is incumbent upon each one of us to do our homework and research when making statements and speeches about these sensitive matters.

      As for your more substantive comments

      1) I have no idea what happened between Zimmerman and Martin. So yeah, lenity says Zimmerman shouldn't be in jail. But for him not to have been arrested does seem to point to an inequity in our society.

      2) Yep, Obama's poll numbers are dropping! I blame Obama's stupid continuation of the NSA's spying and crappy IRS management, personally.
      But on the other hand, it would be no fun if my side just steamrolled the competition. And also, no good for America if only one point of view were represented in our leadership.
      Which is why I am not a Freeper, or whatever their liberal equivalent is.

  3. I think I've read the saddest article possible on FR. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3054237/posts?page=1. The author is concerned that his children, attending a Seventh Day Adventist school, will be taking a course titled "Social Justice." He want ammunition for a discussion with the instructor. Naturally all the Freepers are piling on how Social Justice is just another name for Communism, or for the greedy lazy poor to feel entitled to the wealth of the truly hard workers in society.

    Good grief! Not a true Christian in the whole, sad lot! And not a single one of them would recognize that fact.

    1. When I meet with this guy and the head of curriculum I want to be armed with as much accurate information as possible.

      I just had to laugh when I read this. If s/he goes in to talk to the instructor armed with the "accurate information" from Free Republic...well, I'll just say that I'd love to be a fly on the wall. The words "Curb stomp battle" come to mind, and it's not likely to turn out in favor of the Freeper.

    3. The right has demagogued the words "social justice" until they've been warped beyond repair. Most Freepers think it either means communism, welfare, or government meddling, and the only justice needed is God stepping in and fixing things. Trouble is, that never happens. Our government has as part of its mission the duty to ensure justice. Freepers would do well to remember our Declaration of Independence:
      "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. ***That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men***, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed..." Emphasis mine.

  10. That's not humor, that's truth. I don't know if you live in the U.S. or pay much attention to politics here, but there is no other explanation for Republicans' behavior when it comes to policies affecting women's health. When you consider their reaction to abortion is to call it "infanticide," but they don't care what happens to the child after it's born is a big clue. Another one is how they couldn't care less about freedom of religion for individuals, but they get all teary-eyed about it when it comes to corporations wanting to deny women birth control.

    That is the truth, and I will not apologize for telling it like it is.

    Honest discussion is hard to find - especially when the loons (on both sides, to be fair) seem to dominate the discussion and make ridiculous points that take over the narrative.

    I follow US politics very carefully. Not personally fond of abortion (consider life to begin at conception) but it isn't really my call, is it. I am not the one who has to raise the kid. In favor of the other services provided by PP (for example). Easy access to contraception, testing for both STDs and various cancers and, most importantly, education. With 1 in 6 young adults infected with HPV, that seems a no brainer!

  12. I can respect that. And no one is really fond of abortion, especially not the women who are forced to make that decision due to circumstances beyond their control. But the option definitely has to be available, as well as education, medication and contraceptives.

    But many of the so-called pro-life organizations (as well as many of their members) are terrorists. What I mean by that, is they use terror tactics to limit access to abortion, like putting out "Wanted" posters with pictures of abortion doctors on them, holding up signs with graphic pictures of aborted fetuses, and even supporting legislation that forces doctors to give women false information about abortions or makes her go to a "counselor" who will try to talk her out of the abortion.

    I would have some respect for the pro-life movement if instead of trying to use those tactics to take us back to the days of back-alley abortions, they would help figure out ways to make abortions less necessary. And they also need to stop demeaning women.

  13. I agree with Bill Clinton, possibly for the only time. (Though I do like the sod, he's a damned charmer).

    Safe and rare. Spend some money and some time teaching responsible sexuality and abortions would all but disappear. So would STDs.

    Being not American - I would suggest that a lot of the angst involved in sex education is more prudishness than anything else. To use an old and tired example - I can turn on the TV in the USA and see hundreds of people killing each other. Want to see sex, I got to enter my credit card.

    That summarizes your posts perfectly. Show me proof that any Old Testament laws were done away with by Jesus. Especially considering Matthew 5:17-19:
