Freepers argue about pot

More and more states are decriminalizing weed. Freepers find themselves caught between the social conservatives of the 1950s and the also social conservatives with this one exception of the also 1950s.

Things get amusingly heated and petty.

fwdude knows the government will soon be shoving drugs down all our throats:
The government permitting of illicit drugs will soon become the government promoting illicit drugs, just as Lawrence permitting homosexual sodomy soon became an all-out push for government benefits for the same.

This new milieu of "legal-makes-moral" is the hallmark of a degenerate society. We once had relatively few laws because a moral underpinning, a societal fabric of morality, created and upheld effective taboos that were every bit, if not more so, effective as laws.
greene66 gets rather dramatic:
A nation of degenerate dopeheads.

America has become a damned sewer of a country. Socialism, dope, and homo-marriage. My interest in its preservation gets smaller and smaller by the day. I suspect by 2016, I won’t even bother voting anymore. There is just no reason to.
ifinnegan blames the 60's:
Drug use has caused all this excrement we are dealing with since the 60’s.

Is just snowballed.

Drugs are what did in our nation.
GeronL weighs in:
The left has dumbed down this country to the point where everything EXCEPT decency and standards are acceptable to the masses
DJ Taylor tells a story from 'Nam:
I've never used marijuana, but I've worked with or around people who did, and from this I learned several things.

Marijuana stays in the users system much longer than does alcohol. The effects of Marijuana use will remain in the users system and affect his motor skills for over twenty-four hours, and alcohol's effects will usually be gone in no more than eight hours. As usual, I earned this one the hard way.

During the Vietnam War, I was making a heliborne assault on a mountainside when the pilot suddenly lost control and crashed the helicopter. There was a thorough investigation into the accident, and it was found that the helicopter crew had been smoking marijuana the night before and the pilot was still affected by it the following afternoon.

We learned the hard way in Vietnam that there might be a few things a person may be able to do after smoking marijuana but flying helicopters isn't one of them.
WayneS notes how far natural law arguments can go:
Sorry. But just like abortion, queer marriages, pedophillia, and so on...

Your personal freedoms do not overide the common good.

Unless of course you think like a liberal.

On the contrary, “the common good” does NOT over-ride personal freedoms, so long as others are not harmed by their exercise. Abortion and pedophilia cause direct harm to people other than those who practice it. A person smoking a joint in their own house does not.

But thanks for supporting the “gun-grabbers” arguments anyway...
Responsibility2nd does not take kindly to this logic:
In what stoned out frame of mind do you see an argument for the “gun-grabbers” arguments here?

Its bad enough that you defend illgal drugs, but to make up and insert arguments not on the table is just too liberal.
In fact, Responsibility2nd rejects the concept of argument-by-analogy entirely:
You could not win your argument by staying on topic, so you introduced a new “bait and switch” diversionary tactic to try and build up your weak arguments.

Here try this: It doesn’t work either, but stamp your foot - call me a doody-head and tell the teacher on me.

Its all the same.
Finny takes on the ashes and sackcloth people:
Oh, America was the greatest achievement civilization ever saw, and was an unequivocal force of good in the world. I marvel at its history and heritage. As recounted on another thread, I used to go to library and I spent HUNDREDS of hours reading through old newspapers on microfilm (apparently while other FReepers were out getting wasted on dope), going through endless decades recounting America’s greatness.

THAT was America. Not Obama’s Choom-Gang America, full of socialists and deviants. America is a pathetic, dying shell of everything it once was. A country that is so intent on defining deviancy down, with a putrid culture of dope, homo-marriage, and Miley Cyrus twerking... is a country that has thrown itself away. Embracing dope, faggotry and evil. That’s what America is transitioning to, an truly degenerate and evil entity.

They might be just partially symbolic, but the country now gung-ho on fag-marriage and now ‘endorsing’ dope, makes me question my lifelong interest in wanting and trying to salvage the country as a whole. A dopehead nation is not a nation I’m going to put my life on the line for, to put it mildly.

Please, please, please, both of you, MOVE TO FRANCE since you think Americans are such losers in spite of ample evidence that Obama/leftism/gay-hugging/defining deviancy down, are promoted by a minority that dominates the MSM and wins elected office by CHEATING.

Please. Do America and yourselves a favor: MOVE THE HELL OUT OF THE U.S.A. You hate America and your fellow Americans so much so you are now part of the problem. Please LEAVE.
ansel12 starts calling people liberals:
Americans don't need laws forbidding them to "marry" gay partners. Members of the military don't need laws forbidding homosexuals from acting openly in its culture of officers and ranks.

Americans by nature reject open homosexuality civilly and peacefully -- civilized Westerners have done so for centuries.

Recent judicial and civil rights law forbid a cake baker from refusing to serve a homosexual couple. Laws now punish military folks for discriminating against an openly homosexual person from being included in various activities and venues. That is the authoritarian way of today's government, and it got there because a minority basically cheated and manipulated its way into power over a majority, and then used government to dictate morality.

That very authoritarianism via laws forbidding moral choices, is what has brought the problem about -- government is the mechanism of tyranny. Advocating for more of it in the other direction is as misguided.

You lefties come at conservatism from all kinds of angles, using all kinds of vocabularies, in all kinds of mediums, and on all kinds of forums, even conservative ones have people working the left’s angle (with adjusted language of course).

But you all have the same end goal.
mrsmel finds a Bible verse against weed!
There was no prohibition in either the NT or OT, nor was there a suggestion that there should be. So how does the Bible justify secular drug laws?

Well, firstly, Jesus said "render unto Caesar" which didn't mean that Christians had to participate in lawful but immoral practices. Secondly, I was always taught (trusting in my pastors and teachers, who had studied the matter and whose teaching always coincided over the years-in this world, I must trust someone, as I will never be a genius who can study it all for myself in the original texts, so I choose to trust those who have never led me wrong on other matters, to the best of my knowledge), that the word translated as "witchcraft"-pharmakia-refers to recreational drug use.

  1. OT: I think we can expect some serious fireworks once FReepers get wind of this:

No idea if it's true or not, but the FR reaction should be very entertaining either way!

  3. I like the anti-marijuana crusaders on FR ...
they're usually the heaviest boozers, often self-described as such.

Regardless, I'm also in no hurry for a nationwide marijuana allowance (though I am strongly in favor of greatly reduced penalties for possession).
The beauty of having fifty states, is being able to conduct fifty different governmental experiments concurrently.

We have Colorado's new pot laws, which are slightly different from Washington's pot laws, which will be different from Oregon's and Alaska's pot laws.

In a few years, all the other states will be able to see what works and what doesn't.

What freepers cannot comprehend is that one of the beauties of our representative democracy, is that it is custom made for a practical government, a government that rather easily can change with the times, or change back if desired.

Our founding fathers, in their wisdom, had absolutely no desire to trap us forever in the year 1776.

Cheeky n00bs usually stumble onto the third rail all on their own eventually.

With that attitude, the person will probably not last long. When they neglect to lurk and learn, to find out how long other FReepers have been here compared to them, and to realize their place here, they tend to get escorted out the door.

Let it go. You have posted some fine information on this thread, so don’t let a haughty n00b tell you different. ;-)

Between TheOldLady, Wagglebee, and the rest of the harpy crew, FR is losing 10 participants for each new one it gains.

    3. Really after the first month or so, most of the reported donations are fake.

Though the "crew" reported 48 new monthly donors joining during this 'thon, FR's scoreboard showed a reduction of 17 monthly donors from October 1st.

If recent 'thon trends continue, by January 1st (the start of the next 'thon), about 30 of those new monthly donors will have disappeared, failing to follow through on their pledge.

  7. After posting an article about truly stupid comments from Peter King (R-NY) about the death of Eric Garner, robowombat follows up with a truly racist introduction post:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not fond of Rep King but he has an excellent point. The squalid way many of the backamoors live makes them prime candidates for lots of health problems. If this whale that the NYPD wrestled to the ground had not spent so much of his life on his fat a*ss pushing pizza, junk food and booze down his pie hole he ery likely wouldn't have been prone to the ailments that really did cause his demise. Here in the swamp state it is common to see obits of blackamoors who are in their early forties who succumb to a combination of couch potato lifestyle and a diet of high fat and liquor. A recent death in the Orleans parish Prison that has the professional people of color playing the violins was a 42 year old brother who picked a fight with the wrong white man and got knocked down. The brother expired a couple hors later at the public hospital. His sister admitted her brother had very high blood pressure and an extensive history of heart disease. In other words a 42 years old whose body was 30 to 40 years older than his chronological age due to the classic urban Afro diet and lifestyle.

    5. The last Freeper in the thread so far even gets the problem:

I have a question for ya. Suppose my law abiding friend Jamal is walking home from work one night when he passes a bar. Out stumbles a 350 lb drunken off duty cop who for no reason whatsoever strikes him in the face and threatens to rip his head off. They scuffle. Fearing for his life, Jamal gets the off duty officer in a choke hold. The officer says “I cant breathe!” a few times and dies of asthma, heart attack or whatever. Jamal is shocked because he wasn’t even holding him that tight.

What will happen to Jamal? Think they will fail to indict him for murder? Will anyone care that the cop was overweight and had asthma?

    7. Well, when I think about it, it makes sense. I have always been glad I grew up in a factory town in Michigan, we were basically a diverse but friendly and inclusive community. At least that how I remember it, I went to ASU and stayed in AZ so I may have a skewed view at this point... I googled the amazing Mr. Spagnuolo and this was the first thing that came up-

Hugh Spagnuolo, an English teacher at Eastern High School, believes that it is in fact due to the local media that Lansing public schools have an increasingly bad reputation. He believes the media should differentiate, rather than simplify. “We are like society overall, in that we have the best people in the world, and we have the worst people in the world.” The teacher said that Eastern students who later go to college tell him how lucky they feel, to have been part of a diverse learning environment. “In college they’re with people who attended segregated (i.e. private) schools. These people have no real perception of what life is like.”

I wonder what your experience was 10 years later?

      Delete
    8. No, you're right, that's how I remember it, too. I went to WMU starting winter of 1993 and basically never moved back to Lansing. I ended up in Columbus, Ohio, but my parents still live in Lansing.

I never had Mr. Spagnuolo as a teacher, but I think my brother (class of '96) did. He's pretty much spot on in his assessment of Lansing schools, college and the media.

One thing I feel lucky for, and one of the reasons I posted the videos, was that I played in a band with such talented musicians. The trumpet and trombone soloists later went on to be professional musicians (no surprise to me). Just listen to them in the videos, "El Tigre", "Rhapsody in Blue" and others (except for the James Bond pieces). This was the trumpet player's sophomore year, so you're listening to a 16-year-old kid play that well! The trombonist was a senior that year and he was amazing, too. Just think, two kids with less than ten years playing experience were that good.

    9. That is great! I love that our Alma Mater encouraged excellence. I know I said "I went to school with that guy" many times while accidently watching sports in my 20's. Seriously at least 6 guys I refused to play volley ball with in gym went pro.

A couple of years ago I ran into a company thru work that is a big wrestling supporter, they stood around and looked at me and called in other people when I said Don Johnson was my principal and Charlie Cross was my gym teacher. Apparently they're famous in that world.... Go Quakers!

      Delete
    10. Don Johnson had left by the time I got there. The principal, Eleanor Doersam, was a classmate of my grandmother's. My gym teacher, Tom Beard, played one season each for the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills. That's about as famous of a teacher I got, that I know of.
