My experience: The people who seem to have a good life but spend it trying to oppress or bully other people don't actually have a good life at all. Gay-bashing closet cases are a classic example -- and I'll bet anyone any amount of money that the loudest anti-gay voices on FR can stand the least scrutiny of their sex lives -- but basic cowardice plays a part, too, I'm sure. (Cf. the quintessential born-again Teabagger Ted Nugent, who rather spectacularly failed to serve when he had the chance, and has been compensating for failing to live up to his own definition of manhood via gun fetishism and tough talk ever since. I'm sure there are plenty like him on FR.)

Wardaddy is a neo-confederate, and because he refuses or outright rejects a post civil war world it's pretty easy to see why he's frothing at the mouth all the time. Hell, looking at his posting history he doesn't care about contemporary American politics at all. He looks down on all blacks with scorn (conservative and non-conservative alike, see if you can find his Herman Cainn post), latinos and has recently started turning on jews as well. Yet he'll embrace dixiecrats (remember when freepers actually tried to distance themselves from them?) and acts as their apologist on several threads. He is also effectively mum on European immigration to America despite his constant anti-foreigner jargon. He also tries to bill himself as a conservative family man and yet he has two girls from a previous marriage with some hispanic Brazilian lady (the funny thing is he bitches about 'miscegenation' all the time as well) and in his current marriage watches so much internet porn that he suspects his wife knows about it but doesn't bring it up.

How Freepers can pretend -- even to themselves -- that they're not hardcore dictator-loving authoritarians is beyond me. They affirm their love for the standard methods of dictatorship constantly, but seldom more shamelessly than they do here.
ReplyDeleteThere's always been a strong authoritarian current in conservatism -- a basic feeling that certain human aspirations ought to be suppressed for as long as possible in the name of an idealized past and its handful of Great Men -- but I'm old enough to remember when conservatives and liberals could at least agree that sending political dissidents to Siberian prison camps is a bad thing.

I am a conservative and proud of it. I want smaller government. Fiscal responsibility and more transparency to the actual electorate. I believe in free markets, in working hard and being allowed to not only keep my money but to lay it out as I see fit, paying my own way, and looking after my kids myself. I believe looking after the environment is every persons duty, as we are to be stewards of the Earth. I believe we have a duty to our fellow men - to reach out and grab their hand to help them back on their feet if they hit hard times, but not to let them hang off your hand for life.
There are things government is useful for. Securing the borders, maintaining the currency and (oddly) the FDA, NASA and the CDC. All else should be down to the individual states.
I want an end to waste. An end to pork stuffed into unrelated bills that no one can read unless they have a degree in BS. An end to the expressed will of the people being squashed by one judge. An end to the frankly divisive tactics. An end to the cronyism and revolving doors between any administration and lobbying firms.
Not a lot to ask for, is it?

I would say that a decent amount of the saner Freepers are conservative, but not all conservatives are Freepers.

Most conservatives who have heard of and joined FR were driven away by the hate and the harpys. Leave them to their little world of spite - they are a good lesson in what not to be.
