Free Republic is down again.

Never fear, though, Freepers paranoia lives on!
I'm more concerned than annoyed. Things aren't going well for the left & I would not put it past them (or the moochbots/ "occupiers") to hack FR. This is the longest it's been down for me.
Well, I've still got about four threads left to hit this week -

  • "Don't bother posting WND article "Blogger: Why don't blacks behave?"
  • "Autopsy Inconclusive for Obama Campaign Worker Who Collapsed at Chicago Campaign HQ,"
  • "Shocking! Banned In America! Exposing Obama Would Reveal The Depth Of US Government Corruption," and
  • "Barbara Bush gushes about Bill Clinton, says he treats George H. W. Bush like a father."

I'd better tell Soros to back off for a bit.

  1. I thought they bought or upgraded their servers recently? This is happening all to often and indicates a lack of commitment on the part of Robinson to get it right on that site.

It's not as if he doesn't make any money off the site.

    1. Freepathons are failing to get them good quality servers? Color me shocked.

  2. Ozy, when you talk to Mr. Soros, tell him that I didn't get my check this month.

    1. Just be patient. I got mine a few days late, too.

  3. Obama must have ordered a hit on the Freeper servers.

  4. Rim Jobs $80k per quarter griftathons aren't going towards new servers, they're going into his pockets. Why do you guys hate entrepreneurs so much? :)

    1. There was some discussion about this on Free Republic a while back. Some of the more educated Freepers pointed out that this server problem could be fixed for cheap.

I sometimes wonder if FR doesn't pull the plug just so they can worry the Freepers, get them to send in some more of that Social Security money. Maybe, maybe not.

    2. I actually could see JimRob pulling the plug just to put the scare into the freepers.

On the other hand FR looks like it was coded in the early 2000, and has never been updated. JimRob stubbornly refusing to update or change is more inline with his freeper nature.

    3. Granted. To be fair though, reddit looks like shit. It's wildly popular.

That being said, FR really does need an upgrade. You get halfway through the comments and run across some Bozo saying, in reply to some comment three pages back, "Yeah buddy, I designed Moochelle's dress and fit it on the alien I keep in my backyard" and you have no idea what the hell he is talking about because there is no reference to the previous comment.

Some of us are interested in dress designers and aliens. We'd like to know. This very well could be some interesting bullshit. But the design of FR almost precludes the reader from knowing what's happening with pink taffeta and green skin. Nobody is going to page back three times to find out what the original comment was.

Too bad FR is so freaking broke that they can't upgrade. And that is where I agree with you, MDaF. They don't want it to be too readable. It's mostly there for folks to blast out their opinions, not read what others have written, it's not meant for those who like to take a moment to think about things.

    4. Their server problems usually do coincide with griftathons, gotta scare grandma into donating

    5. Yeah, at least having cascading comments would be nice. It’s supposed to be a “discussion and activism page” not a comment blasting page like Fark.com. Also stop people from double posting, and also have a logical way to get back to the topics forum page because I’m tired of that stupid title page and its terrible gif images.

    6. I dunno, I like Free Republic more than a lot of the modern commenting systems like disqus - the reply functionality and the click-response are nice.

Still, from what the internet gurus say, the site was down due to software, not hardware problems.

I do wonder at how the last 3 outages have been during fundraisers, but then Free Republic is fundraising over half the time these days...

    7. Good point, MDaF. It is a lot like Fark.

    8. I'm with Ozymndias, like the minimalist system of FR with no bandwidth wasted on avatars, graphics, annoying ads, put aside the captivating craziness of its denizens and it's quite a handy little news aggregator site..... I'd even chip in a few bucks to help its administrators earn a good living off the site were it not so obvious that its founder is a vicious bile-dripping toad of a religious nutjob.

And for the fellow anonymous poster above saying there is no reference to a previous comment, I'm not sure what you are talking about: at the bottom of each comment, in blue there is a link saying "TO X", where X is the number of the earlier comment to which the current comment is a reply.

  5. I think it's kind of nice that these die-hard Commie Hunters are spending their declining years on a collectively funded site that barely works, trying to outdo each other in shows of ideological zeal to win favor from their autocratic leader, blaming foreign agitators for the perfectly logical consequences of their own bad policies, and ceaselessly informing on one another for betraying the revolution.

It's like the most ludicrous stereotype of a Maoist agricultural commune, but without the sharp uniforms or the moral seriousness.

    1. That may be the greatest analogy for FR I've ever read.

    3. Anon #1, that's an absolutely brilliant analogy.
