Now, I am no freeper and not a fan of the US healthcare system either and we could do a lot to improve the joke that is the health care in the States.
1)We can start off by imposing the Sherman Anti-trust act on hospitals and breaking them up to destroy monopoly pricing
2) We can change the tax code to make it easier for doctors to be independent business owners rather than employees for giant money sucking fatcorps
3) Tort Reform
Lib-scum are deluded if they think that a government bureaucrat would be more caring and ethical than a corporate bureaucrat. If you think the UK NHS is so much better fuck off to the UK and do not come back. I will gladly pay for your ticket.

DeleteFirst, every time there is any threat by the Tories to decrease or freeze funding, the UK media trots out the horror stories regarding waiting times in emergency rooms (Shorter than the average US wait), number of beds (on par with the number of public beds per capita in the US) and rates of deaths in UK hospitals (same or lower than in the US).
Brits love to complain about the NHS. It's a pass time as common as bitching about the rain and immigrants among Brits. However, there is only a tiny percentage that would ever accept seeing a US style (get your own insurance, pay twice as much for everything medical related and good luck) brought to the UK.
Times to see GPs (doctor visits) are shorter than in the US. The average wait is somewhere around a week for routine appointments, to same day or next day for urgent, non emergency, office visits.
I've lived in the UK for 5 years. I lived in the US all my life prior to that. In both countries, I and my family had routine and major (Breastfeeding cancer for my wife in the US and prostate cancer for me in the UK for me). The wife waited 3 months for insurance to approve a mastectomy, then had to fight for weeks to get them to approve reconstruction. my prostate cancer treatment started the same week as diagnosed in england, and there were no issues with treatment or care.
People with major health issues don't wait for care in the UK. People with joint replacement or other non life threatening issue do wait for available resources or can use private hospitals and doctors, which many employers offer supplimentAl insurance for, at much cheaper rates than those in the US.
The NHS isn't perfect but it's a damn sight better than what the US has. Sure, many treatments in the US are only available in the US, but if you research , many of those treatments are either considered experimental outside the US or not covered by insurance in the US anyway.
As for your fixes, anti trust, tort reform etc, that would be a great start, it might even lower rates. But until somone figures out how to control pricing, the US hospitals and drug companies will continue to kill more people than the NHS ever has.
Keep your money. I'll pay for my own tickets back and forth between the states and the UK, as I already do when I visit for business or to see family. You're gonna need that money next time you get sick.

The number of avoidable deaths in the US is 2.5 times the UK rate (195,000 vs 72,000) although the UK population is six times less. On a per-capita basis, the UK rate of avoidable deaths is double the US rates.
